Whale

Japanese Mulberry Kozo paper, Unryu paper, laser cut letters

'Whale' is a hand drawn typeface designed by Jonathan Chao and Misa Chhan. ‘Whale’ was born out of an admiration for letterforms, handwritten text, and big, bold letters often seen in graffiti. This book was made using laser cut letters to give it a dimensionality allowing the viewer to interact, touch and feel the letters, which encourages the viewer to do rubbings from them - a modern tablet.

Cover illustration by Jonathan Chao, book design and binding by Misa Chhan.

Mirrors

 11" x 17" (closed) // 11" x 23" (opened)

2012

Gate fold book made with Mahogany Luan wood, Chromolux paper, Sandragraph, Vinyl, type hand set in Futura and Bembo and printed on Dulcet paper.

The text in 'Mirrors' is appropriated from a tweet by Erykah Badu in February 2012: "If I took all the mirrors out of my hours.. I could spend more hours working on my internal make up.. Think that's a better reason to be late." The reader is guided through the book by using cut papers of different sizes and fragments of text that at first may seen indecipherable. Thus, close-looking is encouraged and ultimately, an examination of oneself.
